Hand Hygiene - Why, When and How

WHY Wash Hands?

Hands are the main pathway of germ transmission. Now more so then ever before, hand hygiene is a vitally important way to avoid the transmission of harmful germs and prevent infections.

WHEN To Wash Hands?

Some of the key times to wash hands to avoid spreading germs are:

  • Before, during, and after preparing food.
  • Before and after eating food.
  • Before and after caring for someone at home who is sick with vomiting or diarrhea.
  • Before and after treating a cut or wound.

AFTER:

  • Using the toilet.
  • Changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet.
  • Blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • Touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste.
  • Handling pet food or pet treats.
  • Touching garbage.

HOW to Wash Hands?

Following the Ministry of Health guidelines, we have put together key steps to effectively wash your hands:

  • Wet your hands under clean running water. Use warm water if available.
  • Use Surmanti Persian Lime & Lemongrass Hand Wash on your hands and wash for 20 seconds. Liquid soap is best.
  • Rub hands together until the soap makes bubbles.
  • Rub on both sides of both hands, in-between fingers and thumbs and round and round both hands.
  • Rinse all the soap off under clean running water. Use warm water if available.
  • Dry your hands all over for 20 seconds. Using a paper towel is best (or, if at home, a clean dry towel).
